My Eyes Saw the Ocean

The rain came down with torrential force that was typical of that time of year in India.

My grandparents looked at me and said you will not be able to walk to your aunt’s home today.  The water is already up to your knees and the sand beneath will make it difficult for you to get to your destination.  With a bit of sadness in my eyes, I answered I understand but I enjoy spending time with them daily.  Besides, I left my book at their home in the middle of a great read.

My grandparents smiled and said let us make tea and enjoy some snacks together.  We will wait for the rain to pass together.  As tea was being prepared, my grandfather said come with me little one.

He took out a piece of paper and started folding it in various directions.  I knew something brilliant was to come out of it.  He had a twinkle in his eye as he handed me a paper boat.  Go sail it from the porch and watch its journey.  We slowly placed it in the water and off it went on its turbulent journey.  It was a breathtaking view as we enjoyed our tea and snacks on the covered verandah.  My grandmother smiled and said he has never done this with our children.  He chuckled and replied I never had the time.

Eventually the rain quieted and my grandfather went to my aunt’s home.  I watched him cross with the water resting below his knees.  He knew from experience how to move in the deep waters, making it look easy.

He returned with my book held safely in his hands.  I beamed as he handed it to me and told my grandparents it was truly an extraordinary afternoon.  My grandparents looked at me and said we hope life always shows you its gifts.

My eyes saw the ocean, we crossed it together.,
